    Not many people know this, but Instagram started as a Foursquare-like app.

    Intrigued by the fact that his app was not catching with the wider public, founder Kevin Systrom took a close look at how users were in fact most interested with the photo-sharing feature.

    He and fellow developer Mike Krieger kept making the app simpler, later pivoting the initially-named Burbn* to Instagram. And the rest is history.

    The lesson here:

    – listen to your customers, even when they don’t talk to you

    – simplify, simplify, simplify

    – focus on one task and nail it

    *Systrom was a fan of Bourbon
